The Community Media Center:

  • serves as a clearing house and service organization to help match those who wish to share their ideas and views through media with those who have the tools to make that possible
  • helps people and civic groups to distribute their viewpoints, stories, and produced pieces to their fellow citizens through new grassroots communication channels.

For example, if a local non-profit service group wishes to share the results of research it has conducted on an issue, for example, affecting children in Maine, in a way that is more in depth than a 30 second clip on the television news, it might come to the Center to find a group with media expertise that would be willing to help the service group tell its story. The Center would put the service group in contact with an organization with production expertise, that has indicated a willingness to participate in the Center's work. The organization could be a school, another non-profit, or even a commercial organization. Both groups and the larger community benefit.

Or perhaps an individual or a group has actually produced a video or multi-media piece that they feel would be if interest to others. A number of high schools in the state, for example, now have video production courses and would be very interested in seeing the output of those courses distributed to a wider audience. The Center could help to provide that distribution in a way that a single school or individual would not be able to, either through electronic channels, physical venues, or both.

To find out about using the Community Media Center's services, either in getting help to tell your story, or to explore how you can help others with your media expertise or equipment to tell their stories, contact the Center.
